Why do you use the acronym LGBTQ+?
According to Google Trends worldwide data, LGBTQ is one the most popular online search terms across the globe over the last 12 months.
LGBTQ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (or Questioning). Many individuals and organizations often use LGBTQ+ to signify all of the communities included in the LGBTTTQQIAA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Two-Spirit, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally) community as well as others including Pansexual, Agender, Gender Queer, Bigender, Gender Variant, and Pangender.
LGBTQ, LGBTI, and LGBTQI, LGBTIA are commonly used terms in many of our MCC communities across the globe. LGBTQ+ presently tends to be the most popular and it may be because it is among the most user-friendly yet inclusive choices, especially when one considers that LGBT and LGBTQ are (according data provided by Google) the most common queer-based acronyms that people use worldwide when performing searches online!
On our website you may also hear the terms “Queer Community” or “Rainbow Community” used to describe the LGBTTTQQIAA+ community. Our community, and our various terms, are always evolving and changing. While writing for a website prompts us to make a choice, we also fully understand that the most important thing is to be respectful to all people and how they choose to identify themselves (or not).
